Development Dependency

We often sit to wonder why it is so difficult for developing countries to progress. Why the problems seem to be never ending and where the new problems arise from? Even after international communities provide aid and economic support to these countries, there seems to be very little progress. The MDG to end poverty by 2015 seems not too far away with yet a lot of work to be done.

UN, World Bank, various governments and humanitarian aid providers never fail to provide for these countries. One of the major donor accepting countries is also Nepal. Nepal has been receiving grants and funds for development for as long as I know. Sadly very little progress has been made in the country. In-fact since the Maoist insurgency the countries economy has fallen below ground level. Since Nepal has been receiving from all around the world, it has been crippled to do anything on its own. The effort that was suppose to be put into the country has been effortlessly put into the pockets of the people in the government- result expensive jeeps for family, new houses, Swiss bank accounts and the list goes on. Nepal now is seeking for more and more, waiting to be provided and spoon fed by other nations/organisations.

The question that then arises in my head is, should every kind of help be stopped for Nepal? Maybe then the country can make efforts to make its people, land and resources self sustainable. Nepal is the second richest country for water, the main source being the Himalayan range, there are many rivers, lakes and water sources. Nevertheless it is hard for the citizens of Kathmandu to get water from their taps everyday, all the time. There are certain dates assigned for areas when they can collect water from their tap. Where is all the waters going? What about the amount of electricity Nepal can generate? Surplus is my answer, but houses in Kathmandu have 16 hours plus of electricity power cut!

My mind boggles to think what can be and what should be done. Its time real development begins……………
