Bomb explosion in New-Delhi
The recently tragic explosion of a cooker bomb near Jama Masjid in New Delhi, has yet again put us all in a shock. This was a second act of violence after attacking 5 Taiwanese media crew only 3 hours earlier. With about 30 injured (the numbers have not yet been confirmed) it makes me concerned about the meaning of such an operation. Not sure as to how it must be classified, either as an ethnic...

Social Media as Voice of the Voiceless
Facebook, twitter, linkendin, hi5, orkut are all very well-known internet sites, that we use quite often. These forms of social media are not only a realm of the geeks but has now started to play a very important role in every field, medicine or human rights. Working for a human rights organisation, one might think less of the importance of social media, we are wrong. Social media has now become...

Discrimination in its own form
In the summer of 2005, as a student I took a part time job at Express, in Mall of America, Minneapolis, USA. Express is a renowned clothing store having sister companies such as Victoria’s secret, Yankee Candles & Co and Limited. After 3 weeks of working in the stores as a sales agent, I was asked by my manager if I always had a nose piercing, because no face piercing was allowed...

Half the Sky, book and movement
A fantastic read for those who are not only feminists or social workers, but who care and who believe that change is possible, is Half the Sky. This book is not only an easy read and well written, but makes you appretiate the changes people have been able to bring about in this world. Often times we read articles, or come across social issues such as education, poverty, violence. We read them in...

Blaming God?
Often times, we like to blame our mishaps in life onto someone or something else. “I can not get a job because the job market is not good”, “I fell down because the floor was slippery” and so on. Not once do we think, that I was not paying attention to where I was walking when I slipped, or my CV or my work experience is not good enough to get me a job! We find a sense of...

Facts about HIV/AIDS
Some important facts: -Ninety-four out of every hundred HIV-infected people live in developing nations, where currently available drug therapies are largely unaffordable. -Sub-Saharan Africa is home to some 66 percent of the world’s cases and 80 percent of its deaths. -Sex workers are at high risk of contracting HIV and AIDS—unprotected sex is the primary method of spreading the...

Universal Access and Human Rights
The theme for this year’s World Aids Day is ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. HIV and Aids were once something people feared. It was once a big highlight but now it is fading away. Just because there is not a lot of hype about it does not mean the problem has been solved. There is still a lot that needs to be done. Being aware is the most important of all. If one knew the exact...

World Aids Day
Its never too late to do something, like a charity event to help spread awareness about issues as important as HIV and AIDS. Yes, all of us know what it is and how it may be contracted but with joint effort one can yet, advance the spread of awareness among young and those who might not be completely familiar with HIV/AIDS and everything else associated with it. 1st December is not too far away,...

Book Launch and Panel Discussion: Murder In the...
Wednesday night (7th October 2009) I attended Rana Husseini’s book launch of Murder In the Name of Honour. This event was organised by Amnesty International UK. Although the weather was disappointing that night and I reached the Human Rights Action Center completely wet and cold, the panel discussion was absolutely inspiring. Weather of UK was not the only thing I had undermined. Although I was...

Development Dependency
We often sit to wonder why it is so difficult for developing countries to progress. Why the problems seem to be never ending and where the new problems arise from? Even after international communities provide aid and economic support to these countries, there seems to be very little progress. The MDG to end poverty by 2015 seems not too far away with yet a lot of work to be done. UN, World Bank,...

Refugees and Resettlement
Issues concerning refugees, such as their rights while in camps, or their issues after resettlement, has been one of my areas of interests. Resettlement has done a lot of good to most of the refugees, nevertheless there are some changes required in the way they are portrayed. Resettlement is a solution for a very small number of refugees in the world. Majority of the refugee population still live...
